Attending your initial physiotherapy consultation is the first active step toward pain-free movement. Knowing what to expect reduces anxiety and helps you prepare for a productive session.

Step 1: Health History & Medical Discussion

Your physiotherapist will review your primary complaints, past injuries, medical conditions, and daily functional goals. Be prepared to discuss when the pain began, what aggravates or relieves it, and any diagnostic imaging (X-rays, MRIs) you have had.

Step 2: Objective Physical Examination

During the physical assessment, your clinician will evaluate:

  • Joint Range of Motion: Measuring flex and extension using a goniometer.
  • Muscle Strength & Flexibility: Identifying imbalances or compensations.
  • Postural Alignment: Observing gait, spinal curvature, and movement efficiency.
  • Specialized Orthopedic Tests: Testing ligament integrity, nerve conduction, and joint stability.

Step 3: Explanation of Diagnosis & Care Plan

Your physiotherapist will outline your diagnosis, estimated recovery timeframe, and recommended session frequency. You will receive a personalized home exercise program (HEP) to reinforce clinical progress between visits.

What to Wear

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting athletic clothing that allows easy access to the injured area (e.g., shorts for knee or ankle injuries, tank top for shoulder pain).
