Frequently asked questions

Pelvic floor physiotherapy helps address various concerns including incontinence, painful intercourse, pelvic organ prolapse, pregnancy related pain, postpartum recovery, and persistent low back pain.

Oh yes! Pelvic floor physiotherapy at Centered In Health does include pelvic floor strength testing and exercises (kegels) but it will also include assessment and treatments for the low back and hips, breathing patterns, muscle tension, core muscle strengthening, and pain science education and strategies. Your Physio will also provide a holistic management plan that fits your goals and needs.

All appointments are done one on one in a private room. Your symptoms, history, and individual life circumstances are discussed and a physical exam is done. Physical exams typically include assessing the back, hips, and abdominals, breathing patterns, and an internal exam of the pelvic floor muscles and structures. Please see the What to Expect page for more details.

No! While an internal pelvic exam provides valuable information and an opportunity to treat the tissues directly, it is important that you are comfortable at all times in your appointment. Your Physiotherapist can discuss alternative options to assess and treat your pelvic floor concerns.

Yes! Starting pelvic floor physiotherapy while pregnant is a great way to be proactive and help prepare for labour and delivery as well as manage symptoms during pregnancy. General pain or discomfort can be addressed at any point in pregnancy. Internal pelvic floor exams can be performed after your first trimester after screening for safety.

Postpartum pelvic floor assessments can be done at any point after delivery. An internal vaginal exam can be included in an assessment or subsequent sessions once bleeding has stopped and tissue healing is complete, typically 4-6 weeks after delivery.

Yes! Many factors aside from delivery impact your pelvic floor including pregnancy, hormone fluctuations, and postural changes. Your physiotherapist can also help address diastasis recti abdominis (abdominal separation), cesarean scars, and returning to physical activity.

Every person is different so every treatment plan is different. At the end of your first session, your physiotherapist will work with you to create an individualized treatment plan and follow up schedule based on your goals, symptoms, assessment findings, and other individual factors.

Yes! While it can be a little more distracting for you to have your baby/child with you, it is also often necessary so they are always welcome. The clinic has toys available to help entertain them during your appointment and you are welcome to bring toys, bottles, or snacks as needed.

Yes. Having your period does not need to alter your appointment as long as you are comfortable. Your physiotherapist can still perform an internal pelvic exam and treatment. Having an internal exam during your period can also provide additional information as hormone fluctuations can impact the pelvic floor and related symptoms. If you are uncomfortable having an internal exam due to your period you can discuss with your Physio ways to adjust your appointment or reschedule to a different date.
