Frequently asked questions

Physiotherapy is the treatment and prevention of physical injuries and movement problems. Physiotherapists use education and preventative measures such as exercises to help patients gain the highest possible level of independent function. – CPM

Physiotherapy is a very active form of treatment. You will not recover from your injury by just lying on a table and your therapist ‘fixing’ you. You will be required to actively participate in your recovery. Your therapist will perform hands on therapy techniques, but you will also be educated and asked to perform a variety of in-clinic and at home exercises. If you are looking for a treatment that will provide lasting changes and are willing to actively assist in making those changes happen, then physiotherapy is for you!

Upon arrival to the clinic you will have a couple information forms to fill out, so it is advised you try to arrive 10 minutes early to complete these. Your therapist will then perform a comprehensive examination and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan for you. The plan will include an approximate number and frequency of treatments required, in-clinic treatment options, and a home exercise program. If time allows, treatment will be initiated at your first visit. Expect your first visit to last one hour.

Physiotherapy sessions usually last between 45-60 minutes, depending on the nature of your injury. You may let your therapist know if you are short on time, and they will adjust your treatment to ensure you finish on time.

The exact number of treatments needed will vary from person to person. It is common to require 1-3 visits per week at the start of your treatment program. You will require less frequent visits as your treatment plan progresses. Your in-clinic therapy will conclude when your goals are met and you are able to maintain your physical status at home with a home exercise program.

It is important that your therapist is able to easily access the area of injury. It is recommended that you bring shorts and a tank top. Gowns are available for use if you prefer.

Manitoba Health will cover the cost of physiotherapy when you receive physiotherapy in the hospital setting. A doctor’s referral is required to be placed on their waiting list. The cost of physiotherapy in a private clinic is not covered.
